SUMMARY:Four Years Wild: A Hike at Woodbury Mountain Wilderness Preserve
DESCRIPTION:Take a guided hike through the Spring Addition and celebrate four years of protecting this special landscape with Northeast Wilderness Trust \n\n\n\n\nJoin Northeast Wilderness Trust’s Wildlands Ecologist Jason Mazurowski for a guided walk at Woodbury Mountain Wilderness Preserve in East Calais\, Vermont\, on Saturday\, September 26 from 9 a.m. – 12 p.m. \nFour years ago\, the Spring Addition permanently protected 123 acres of rugged cliffs\, perched wetlands\, and mature forests\, expanding NEWT’s Woodbury Mountain Wilderness Preserve—the largest nongovernmental wilderness area in Vermont. Join NEWT’s Wildlands Ecologist and Woodbury resident Jason Mazurowski to celebrate the anniversary of the expansion while enjoying peak fall foliage. We’ll explore one of the Preserve’s most geologically unique and least-visited corners and learn about the ecology\, geology\, and natural history that make it so remarkable. \n\n\nTicket reservations are required: \n\n\n\n\n\nWalk/Hike Description: This moderately difficult hike will take us through two of Vermont’s Biophysical Regions and across the geologic contact\, or boundary\, that separates them. Along the way\, we’ll visit a beaver pond wetland complex\, discuss the ecology of old forests in the Northeast\, explore an uncommon natural community\, and learn about ongoing Wildlands Ecology research being conducted within the Preserve. \nBio: Jason Mazurowski is an ecologist and naturalist with a background in field research\, teaching\, and conservation. Before joining NEWT\, he taught in the University of Vermont’s Field Naturalist program and studied pollination ecology at the Gund Institute for Environment. He holds an M.S. in Plant Biology from UVM and a B.S. in Geology and Environmental Studies from SUNY Buffalo. Jason’s connection to the north woods comes from years as a guide\, dog sled musher\, and naturalist. He now lives near Woodbury Mountain Wilderness Preserve\, where he enjoys exploring\, studying wildlife\, and spending time outdoors with his border collie\, Raven.

DESCRIPTION:Hope is Wild. The forests of the Northeast are some of the most important on the planet. They also represent a remarkable second chance. Just over a century ago\, much of the region was cleared for agriculture; today\, much of the forest has regrown. What we choose to do with this gift from Nature is one of the great questions of our time. One strategy taking hold is rewilding\, an often misunderstood approach that trusts natural processes to lead the way. Hear from Jon Leibowitz\, President and CEO of Northeast Wilderness Trust\, about what rewilding really means\, the common characteristic of wild places across the world\, and why bringing back old\, complex forests is a hopeful endeavor in these trying times. An opportunity for conversation will follow remarks. This event is free and open to the public. Registration is required here.  \nJon Leibowitz is the President & CEO of Northeast Wilderness Trust\, where he has led the organization’s work to protect forever-wild landscapes across New England and New York since 2017. His path to conservation began with a summer as a park ranger in Vermont\, an experience that changed the trajectory of his life and led him to Vermont Law School\, where he earned a Juris Doctor and a Master’s in Environmental Law and Policy. He launched his conservation career in 2012 as Executive Director of Montezuma Land Conservancy in Colorado\, and he remains connected to the Four Corners as co-owner of WildEdge Brewing Collective in Cortez. \nJon lives in Middlesex\, Vermont\, at the southern edge of the Worcester Mountains\, where he enjoys gardening and exploring the surrounding forest. DESCRIPTION:Northeast Wilderness Trust’s free\, virtual 2026-2027 Speaker Series kicks off on Zoom on October 7 with Dr. Doug Tallamy. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDr. Tallamy\, a lauded entomologist and widely cited authority on pollination ecology\, will give a presentation on the relationship between forests and pollinators\, explaining how a wide array of these critical insects relies on forest ecosystems for part or all of their life cycles. Tallamy will then join NEWT’s Wildlands Ecologist Jason Mazurowski for a discussion about how wilderness conservation can play a role in the wider effort to reverse pollinator declines and restore ecosystems. The webinar will close with a Q&A between Tallamy\, Mazurowski\, and the audience. \nDr. Doug Tallamy is a professor of entomology and wildlife ecology at the University of Delaware\, where he has spent four decades studying how native plants and insects depend on each other—and what happens when that relationship breaks down. His books\, including Bringing Nature Home and the New York Times bestseller Nature’s Best Hope\, have changed how people think about the land around them. Doug’s central insight is both simple and profound: the private land across the United States adds up to more acreage than all national parks combined. That land can either support wildlife or work against it. The choice belongs to the people who live there. \n\n\n
