SUMMARY:Wildlands Ecologist Shelby Perry Presents @ Kestrel Land Trust: Conservation Action for Biodiversity: Wildlands - The Cornerstone of Ecological Resilience
DESCRIPTION:“Nature contains worlds of mysterious and remarkable life in such fantastic diversity that humans have only come to understand a small slice of this wonderful web we are a part of. Underpinning the work of conserving wildlands is the belief that all beings – from charismatic megafauna like bears and bobcats\, to inconspicuous microorganisms like slime molds and nematodes – have a right not just to survive\, but to thrive\, reproduce\, and evolve. Protecting wildlands shelters even the parts of nature that are not well understood by humans\, safeguarding a home for the full spectrum of life.” \nThe term “wildland” refers to places unmanaged by humans\, where nature can maintain autonomy across all the scales at which life exists. The result\, when allowed to play out over appropriate time scales in the northeast\, is (usually) old forests\, rich with life. \nJoin us on Wednesday\, May 29th\, 6:00-7:30 pm for an online presentation by Shelby Perry\, Wildlands Ecologist at Northeast Wilderness Trust. She will lead us on a journey through the process of rewilding in forests in the northeast\, discuss the implications of wildlands protections for biodiversity\, and introduce us to a few of the lesser known residents of these places. \nRegistration is required on Kestrel Land Trust’s website.

SUMMARY:Protecting Half of Earth for All Life
DESCRIPTION:Register here!\nJoin Northeast Wilderness Trust virtually for a talk with special guest Dennis Liu; watch from the comfort of your own home and participate in a Q&A discussion. \nThe goal for global conservation is Half\, inspired by E.O. Wilson’s call to protect half of our precious planet for the rest of nature. Although the “America the Beautiful” campaign\, the US implementation of 30 x 30\, is a good start\, it will not be enough to reverse the current extinction crisis and bring humanity into the safe zone. At this time\, the US currently has about 15% of its land under formal protection for biodiversity\, which matches the global percentage. Half-Earth’s goal of 50% is not reachable in the US through state and federal action alone. It must include conservation by non-profits\, NGOs\, and individuals—including the forever-wild lands Northeast Wilderness Trust protects. Half-Earth’s goal is to leave no species behind. Dennis Liu will feature stories of charismatic creatures like hummingbirds and dragonflies\, and discuss how protecting one species often benefits others. He’ll also talk about what each of us can do as individuals and as communities to support all of the miraculous species we love and need. \n  \nDennis Liu\, Ph.D. is an internationally recognized expert in science education. Midway in his career\, influenced by E.O. Wilson\, he shifted his focus from molecular medicine to what Ed called “the little things that run the world\,” – from ants to hummingbirds to pitcher plants\, the millions of other species our very lives depend on. As Vice President of Education for the E.O. Wilson Biodiversity Foundation\, Dennis works to carry forward Ed’s mission to protect our planet’s precious biodiversity now and for future generations. Dennis also serves on the boards of the American Chestnut Foundation\, Homegrown National Park\, and as Board President for the American Conservation Film Festival. \n  \n  \nPhoto: Alder Stream Wilderness Preserve\, ME and farm field across the Piscataquis River by Jerry Monkman/Ecophotography

SUMMARY:Biodiversity: The Language of Wilderness
DESCRIPTION:Register here!\nJoin Northeast Wilderness Trust virtually for a talk with special guest Janet McMahon; watch from the comfort of your own home and participate in a Q&A discussion. \nUnderpinning the work of Northeast Wilderness Trust is the belief that all organisms\, from charismatic bobcats and bears all the way down to inconspicuous microorganisms like slime molds and nematodes\, have the right not just to survive but to thrive\, reproduce\, and evolve. Ecologist Janet McMahon will share how old forests offer niche and under-represented habitat types\, supporting higher levels of biodiversity across many taxa. Learn how old and undisturbed forests act as lifeboats in the face of extinction\, habitat loss\, and climate change. \n  \nJanet McMahon is a consulting ecologist for conservation organizations\, state agencies\, and private landowners. She developed a blueprint for an ecological reserves system for the state of Maine and her thesis\, The Biophysical Regions of Maine\, is used as a framework for landscape-scale conservation efforts by The Nature Conservancy and others. Janet authored the second volume of Northeast Wilderness Trust’s Wild Works series\, which focuses on biodiversity. Read Wild Works 2 here. \n  \nPhoto: White Admiral butterfly by Bryan Pfeiffer.

SUMMARY:"This Land Was Saved for You and Me" with Author Jeffrey Ryan (Vermont)
DESCRIPTION:Northeast Wilderness Trust\, in partnership with North Branch Nature Center and Bear Pond Books\, welcomes author Jeffrey Ryan to share his new book about the creation of public lands in America: This Land Was Saved for You and Me. Jeffrey will read highlights from “This Land\,” which traces the protection of America’s public lands by identifying a series of critical generational handoffs — from Frederick Law Olmsted to Gifford Pinchot to the generation of foresters that would lead the movement to preserve some lands as forever wild. Ryan’s book features many notable names\, but importantly many lesser-known people whose efforts broke new ground by recognizing that America’s resources were not inexhaustible\, calling for a means of protecting and managing them before it became too late. \nCopies of “This Land” will be available for purchase and signing at the event. $5 from each book sold will be donated to Northeast Wilderness Trust in support of conserving forever-wild landscapes for nature and people.  \n \n

SUMMARY:"Our Better Nature" Book Launch & Biodiversity Walk
DESCRIPTION:Come celebrate the release of Our Better Nature: Hopeful Excursions in Saving Biodiversity\nJune 15 from 6:00 to 7:30 pm | FREE\nNorth Branch Nature Center \nLearn why Bill McKibben writes\, “This book could not be more timely\, more charming\, more useful\, or more needed! Anyone who cares about our small and lovely state will want to spend time with it – its impact will spread beyond Vermont’s borders.” \n \nA collaboration among Vermont conservation organizations and conservationists\, this work\, grounded in experience and science presents readers with stories\, essays\, and resources to guide and inspire action in favor of nature everywhere. \nDedicated to pioneering biologist and author Edward O. Wilson (1929–2021). \nA lifelong observer of nature\, E. O. Wilson noted what we all must: Of all the challenges facing the planet\, the loss of biodiversity and the current extinction crisis are among the gravest. In the face of this\, and in light of Wilson’s optimism in spite of it\, Our Better Nature offers messages of hope. \n\nStories of creative citizens whose successes with protecting and restoring nature are examples we can apply anywhere. \nEssays by regional experts who help us understand the power of resilient ecosystems\, of nature education for all ages\, and Vermont’s dedication to conservation science.\nResources for turning our collective desire to protect biodiversity into actions that do.\n\nAt the event\, you’ll hear readings from several contributors to the book – George Schenk\, farmer and founder of American Flatbread\, Tom Butler\, Senior Fellow at the Northeast Wilderness Trust\, Alicia Daniel\, founder of the Vermont Master Naturalist Program\, and Sean Beckett\, Director of Natural History Programs at North Branch Nature Center. \nYou’ll also have the opportunity to purchase the book for $25 (by cash or check)\, get your book signed\, see photographs from the book\, and enjoy some refreshments. The event will conclude with a short biodiversity walk led by North Branch Nature Center staff. The first fifteen purchasers will receive a hand painted bookmark by George Schenk. \nIf the weather is nice\, the program will be outside under a tent. If inclement\, we’ll gather in the community room. \nSponsored by North Branch Nature Center\, Northeast Wilderness Trust\, Vermont Natural Resources Council\, and Vermont Alliance for Half-Earth. \n  \nDragonfly photo by Sean Beckett

SUMMARY:NEW DATE: Wild Animals We Thought We Knew
DESCRIPTION:New Date! Register here.\nNaturalist and professional tracker Susan Morse has traveled North America photographing and studying some of our most iconic creatures\, including cougars\, bears\, caribou\, wolverines\, and Canada lynx. Her studies of scent-marking and “babysitter trees” have contributed to the new body of research that shows how little we have understood these animals\, potentially resulting in management assumptions and practices that are inappropriate. Sue argues that it’s time to approach conservation and management with humility. SUMMARY:Bear With Us!
DESCRIPTION:Living with Bears in the North Country…\nRegister here.\nBe prepared for lots of fascinating information on black bear biology and ecology\, with emphasis on the field identification of tracks and sign. Sue is very excited about this show because it offers the most comprehensive discussion of bear scent-marking behaviors\, illustrated with dozens of her original images. As for living in harmony with black bears\, it’s entirely up to us\, as this program will solidly demonstrate. “Bear safety” is achieved largely because of what we do out there\, whether it be in the wild or around our home and farmyard. It is more about what we can do to minimize the hazards we pose to bears. As a bonus we will also explore Sue’s adventures studying and photographing grizzly\, brown\, and polar bears. \nCo-hosted with Mad River Valley Bear Initiative. For more information on the MRV Bear Initiative and resources on living with bears\, click here.  \nThis event is free and made possible by the generous support of the MRV Bear Initiative and Northeast Wilderness Trust. \n  \n \nAbout the Speaker \nSusan Morse is an ecologist\, professional wildlife tracker\, educator\, and published author. DESCRIPTION:Register here.\nJoin Rich Holschuh for a place-based perspective on listening to the layers of stories embedded in the land. These values persist and offer lasting examples\, despite centuries of attempts at erasure. \nThis event is free and made possible by NEWT’s wonderful community of supporters. Please consider a $5-10 donation to support Northeast Wilderness Trust’s work to save wild places. Click here to make a gift…thank you! \n  \n \nAbout the Speaker \nRich is a resident of Wantastegok (Brattleboro\, VT) and an independent historic and cultural researcher. He has served on the Vermont Commission on Native American Affairs and is a public liaison and Tribal Historic Preservation Officer for the Elnu Abenaki\, members of the contemporary Indigenous community. Rich is founder of the Atowi Project. His work draws upon indigenous history\, linguistics\, geography\, and culture to share beneficial ways of seeing and being in relationship with place.
