Ecologist and professional tracker Sue Morse will guide participants through the characteristics that set apart old-growth forests from their younger counterparts. We’ll start with the structure of an old forest, from large trees to standing snags to abundant downed and decaying wood, and look at how those features support plants, fungi, and wildlife. Sue will share her personal stories from decades of studying the landscape and the wild creatures who depend upon old and wild ecosystems to find refuge. We recommend watching “Rewilding the Northeast” in advance of the event; this 10-minute video is an introduction to wild, old forests and to Sue’s research and forever-wild land, Babysitter Swamp. Co-hosted with Keeping Track.
