Woodbury Mountain BioBlitz: Winter to Spring Ecology Walk

April 7, 2024 @ 10:00 am - 2:00 pm

Meet-up location: Knights of Columbus Hall (206 Vermont 14 Hardwick, VT 05843); max. 20 participants. RSVP here to reserve your spot!

Join Eric Sorenson, ecologist, for a ramble on the diverse and beautiful Woodbury Mountain Wilderness Preserve. We will visit and explore wetland and upland natural communities, discuss the natural processes at play in each, examine soils, and discuss the bedrock and glacial history of the Woodbury Mountain area. With either snow cover or a warm spring day, we will identify trees, shrubs, herbs, bryophytes, birds, and animal tracks as we walk. And while immersed in the Woodbury Mountain Wilderness Preserves, we will discuss the importance of old forests, wilderness, and how this preserve is critically important for ecological connectivity between the Adirondacks Mountains and the Gaspé Peninsula. Please wear footwear for spring tromping, bring lunch for the day, bring a hand lens if you have one, and be prepared for the weather of the day. Be prepared for a 2-3 mile hike up possibly steep terrain.

About Eric: Eric is an ecologist, with special interests in natural communities, birds, mosses, and conservation science. He is a coauthor of Wetland, Woodland, Wildlands: A Guide to the Natural Communities of Vermont, and is a proud board member of Northeast Wilderness Trust.
