Northeast Wilderness Trust welcomes research conducted by students, institutions, or independent researchers whose work is compatible with our mission to protect and study forever-wild landscapes.
Research methods should minimize impacts to soil, vegetation, wildlife, or hydrology. Non-invasive and minimally invasive methods such as observational studies and passive monitoring are preferred. Studies involving habitat alteration, permanent infrastructure, vegetation clearing, pesticide use, motorized access, or significant disturbance to wildlife or sensitive habitats are prohibited.
All proposals are reviewed on a case-by-case basis by NEWT’s Wildlands Ecology team. Because NEWT preserves are managed primarily for natural processes, preference is given to projects that advance understanding of rewilding, natural ecological processes, biodiversity, climate resilience, and long-term forest succession.
Researchers interested in conducting work on NEWT lands should apply through our Research Permission Form below and direct any questions to our wildlands ecology team ecology@newildernesstrust.org.
